MY LITTLE RED BOOK by Rachel Kauder Nalebuff

Book Quote:

“For girls who have just gotten, or are about to get your first period, this book will help you know what to expect and remind you that you are not alone. Hopefully, it will open your eyes to the women around you and let you see that even your bingo-playing grandma was once in your same position. And you don’t have to be a girl to enjoy MY LITTLE RED BOOK, either. “

A few weeks ago, my mom handed me a solid red book with a picture of pink underwear on the front. My first reaction was: “Great. Another strange book to throw under my bed and forget about.” She told me that this book was different and it wasn’t like any other I had read. “Sure,” I thought. “That’s what they all say.” I took the book reluctantly from my mom and took a quick look at the introduction. I was amazingly surprised. My mom was right. It wasn’t like any book I’ve ever read. This one was different, a book that every girl and woman in the world could relate to. I finished three quarters of the book that night.

My Little Red Book is an anthology of short stories about women and their first periods, a topic that is very personal, but one that every woman wants to discuss and hear about. Many women and girls feel very uncomfortable and embarrassed talking about periods and the horrible nightmares they have caused. By reading this book I have learned that periods are nothing to be ashamed of or embarrassed by. Periods are simply (or not so simply) a way of life that all women have to go through whether you like it or not. Period.

This engaging and very entertaining book has taken this all a little step further to make all readers feel more comfortable and open about this once awkward and confusing matter. From amusing to touching, these stories are sure to leave every woman more comfortable and glad to be who they are.

I guess I need to thank my mom for giving me another book worth reading :-)
